Transcript of an interview I recorded with Lala Frischkneckt of BURNING WITCHES - 20200219. Full article here MAL-
Hello, Lala, how are you going? LALA- Hey, how are you? MAL- I'm very well, it's good to talk to you again. I've listened to the new album a number of times. and I liked it initially, but I love it now. LALA- I think that this album is very special because of the vocal changes and this aggressive style of Laura's style of voice and yeah, it's, I love it. MAL- She does have a slightly aggressive style of voice doesn't she? You mentioned Laura. From over here on the other side of the world. It seemed to happen very suddenly. But I'm sure it didn't happen very suddenly. So how did the circumstances come about that all of a sudden, from where we sit, Seraina's gone, and Laura is in, you know, debuting at a big festival. What were the circumstances? LALA- Yeah, and we didn't expect that our ex-singer leaves the band but we respect her decision because everybody has their own freedom of choice to do what they want to do. And then, yeah, it's a quick find to have Laura because Sonia is a friend of Laura and Sonia told us that she knows a girl who can sing in BURNING WITCHES. So we tried. We met her two weeks before Sweden Rock Festival. Let me try the old songs and they find it amazing how she can sing the old songs. And then that time we already had the material for 'Wings Of Steel'. And then Romana asked her if she can she wants to sing or can sing the song or she can try the song then she tried the song and then I was just like, wow, it's just amazing. And she really fits into the band because of her voice. And then Okay, our first gig will be in Sweden Rock. Oh my god knows what How can you do this? You can do it and she memorised all this 10 songs in less than two weeks. It's unbelievable. And really everybody's so curious about her because of course, band changes is a bit challenging to the band, and even to the fans right, but she did an incredibly amazing job just for example in 'Wings Of Steel'. And that's the reason that we decided to record 'Wings Of Steel' because we thought that her voice really fits and BURNING WITCHES and she's in Okay, let's record this to show the fans how we sound like with Laura, so the song was just amazing. When the first time I heard that I had goosebumps specially in the second in the second part of 'Wings Of Steel', and I said that this new album is gonna be good. MAL- Yeah, so you did record that, you might say, quite a while ago to sort of welcome Laura to the band. LALA- Yeah. MAL- You were pretty busy with gigging and touring there for a while because it seemed like you're playing a festival here and then a festival there. And then you ended up at the big one. Tell us about Wacken. LALA- Yeah, we're really surprised when Wacken asked us 'Can you play in Wacken?' and then Romana said, 'Of course, we will play there. This is our dream'. And even Just when we thought that it's the ultimate dream of event, and then we were there and that too many people there at least 8000 people waiting for us, BURNING WITCHES, before we come up to the stage. The people are screaming our name BURNING WITCHES BURNING WITCHES and this like The experience is so surreal and so amazing. And that time it was Laura's birthday and then Sonia asked that 'Yeah come on guys, we can sing Happy Birthday to Laura, and everybody's singing to her and like the fans are welcoming her and for us it's so amazing feeling because the fans accept her, welcome her will make the warm welcome to her now it's so so great. And the people's face at the very end. I mean some people there don't know, don't have any idea what who is BURNING WITCHES and they stay there. MAL- That's a good thing about festivals you discover a new band. Okay, so tell us about after that. When did you get into songwriting for the new album? And how much is Laura contributing to that? Is she one of the major songwriter's on the album. LALA- Yeah, she is doing all the lyrics in the album, she write all the lyrics and some of the lyrics are from me, for example, 'Sea Of Lies' I helped her in that in that specific song. And because of my idea from the lyrically since before then, I just tell her if she wants to use it and she use it and we collaborate our lyrics, and then Romana is making all the songs since the start, right. And after 'Hexenhammer' we already have new material to have a new album. It's just like Romana is I mean, she is unbelievable, limitless ideas. Actually two weeks ago, she phoned me and she told me that 'Hey Lala, I have new ideas for two songs'. 'What are you crazy?' This new album haven't released yet and then yeah know we can try we can have a band session and blah blah blah and then we tried it and sounds really good. So that's Romana, she's so fast in making songs MAL- Starting on the next album already almost. LALA- Crazy. Yeah. Even yesterday she sent me something and I told her that 'Yeah, it's a great for intro, maybe we can we can make another 'Dark Companion' you remember the 'Dark Companion' listen the first album, let's see. Yeah, I think it's gonna be good again. But yeah, this album is great and it's it's a great way to introduce our new witch Laura and yeah, she's doing great and she's easy to work with the funny super funny girl crazy and down to earth. Especially if she's drunk. I love her when she's drunk. MAL- Everything you want. Now the album's coming out on March the 6th but you know, most people have heard three songs at least already 'Wings Of Steel, 'Sea Of Lies' and 'Dance With The Devil'. What's the reaction been like so far? From where I see it, it seems to be very good. LALA- Almost 80% of the comments are positive. Of course, the 20% are the people who will just stay behind their computers every day and doesn't have any idea about music. Because if you read the comment, and it's just like, 'hey, you're just girls and you're just a joke and you don't belong to metal. I mean, you're young people and you're playing 80s metal blah, blah, blah'. And then we just talked about why they're saying that when we love what we're doing? We enjoy what we're doing and our adrenaline is 120% motivation is there. So as long as you love what you're doing, just continue it and then we concentrate on the positive comments and the truly devoted fans that stas with BURNING WITCHES since day one. So we are really thankful for them. MAL- So album coming out March 6th, and you're on the road then I'm just looking at the tour dates now you're going to be pretty busy crisscrossing all over Europe and you've got a couple of big festivals thrown in in festival season as well. So you're ready for that? LALA- Yeah, sure we're always ready for the tour. In fact, we're practising right now what we're gonna play, and we will play new songs and of course fans will also like to hear some old songs and we're going to do that. And we are looking forward to this tour especially with ROSS THE BOSS. It will be a long tour. MAL- Yeah. Now one thing I want to ask you It's nice that you segued into that you mentioned going on the road with ROSS THE BOSS and there's a MANOWAR cover on the album, now what came first? Did you add the MANOWAR cover and then run into Ross and say 'Hey, how about we come out on tour?' or did it happen the other way around? LALA- I know, Romana is a friend of Ross in Facebook. And then Romana is also a big fan of MANOWAR and then she asked that 'Hey, we want to do cover MANOWAR and then can you play the solo there? And then he didn't think twice. And then the good thing is he encouraged Michael Lepond to play the bass. So it turned out really well and I think it's a perfect cover song for the new album because I mean, we covered 'Jawbreaker' we covered DIO and all of these songs and 'Battle Hymn' is one of the best anthems in metal scene everybody loves it just like 'Holy Diver' and 'Jawbreaker' right and then I think it's perfect and turned out really well and I know that this it's a little bit ambitious because it's a complicated song, it's a long so but yeah we love how it ended up, ended up really well. MAL- Just finished chatting to Lala from BURNING WITCHES. Lala, thanks so much for taking my call. LALA- Thank you so much Mal. It's always a pleasure talking to you and thanks for supporting our new album. All the fans in Australia please take our album you will not regret it because it's good stuff. MAL- All right, new BURNING WITCHES album 'Dance With The Devil' out on March 6. Check it out. It's awesome. And Lala thanks again for talking to me. LALA- Thank you so much. It was a pleasure.
