Transcript of an interview I recorded with Stevie D. of BUCKCHERRY - 21/05/19. Full article here. MAL-
Okay, on the line Stevie D from BUCKCHERRY. Stevie, thanks for taking my call. STEVIE- Yeah, Mal, how you doing? MAL- Feel pretty darn well mare now massive tour of Australia for later in the year that's just been announced, but we'll get to that in a little while. Let's backtrack a little bit. You joined I guess you could say the reforming BUCKCHERRY in 2005. How did that come about? What were you doing at the time? STEVIE- Well, I had been a hired gun for a handful years since about 97. I would go in for the record label, I would record the album, go tour the album. And then inevitably, that said band would get dropped. I did that several times. And then I ended up Josh and I had been friends for a long time since the early 90s,and he was working on his solo band at the time, touring. And he was on the road. He called me, I went out and replaced the guitar player. And that band ended up folding. So a couple of months went by, I had been friends with Keith at the time, and Josh and at that point, they were thinking about reforming the band for a show at the Key Club in Hollywood. And Josh and Keith started talking and it was a go. And we all got in a rehearsal room right after that. Keith gave me a call. And we showed up on Tuesday with our rent money and the rest is history. MAL- Been back together since 2005. How's the ride been since then? STEVIE- You know, it was a it was a hit the ground running. In 2005. There was a a track that we had, that had been sitting around for a couple years with Josh and Keith. And that was called 'Crazy Bitch'. And at the time MySpace was in full swing. And that was really the catalyst for that track. It had gone viral which at the time, the videos weren't really that was a new term, you know. And so that took off really started with the Japanese, they weren't the first ones to actually put the album. And then because everyone in the States have passed a couple times. And then once that track caught on then it was you know, full speed ahead. We were off to the races. So yeah, that then song, a song called 'Next 2 You', 'Everything' and then slam dunk or the Grand Slam, as it were was with 'Sorry'. MAL- Yeah, my wife discovered BUCKCHERRY with 'Crazy Bitch'. So there you go. STEVIE- Yeah, I've heard a lot of stories on how people found that song. That song was the best thing for us. MAL- How much are the band touring these days over in the US and other parts of the world? Are you a busy band? STEVIE- Yeah, we're a busy band now. And we built a great touring business from the album, '15', and through time, we had toured so much that we burnt out markets here in the US. So it was suggested to us to take a break and let the demand recreate. And we could go back out. So in the interim, what BUCKCHERRY did as well, Josh, and I did was started another band so we could keep working. And that was called JOSH TODD AND THE CONFLICT. And fast forward a couple years and was ready to get back on the road and the band had splintered at that point. So it was really up to us to either hang it up or write some songs and reform the band. And we chose the latter. MAL- Hang it up or build it up. STEVIE- Yeah. And and what we did is we grabbed some old friends from Hollywood, we could have really called anybody at that point. But it was really important to us to get a couple guys that we could do the long haul with. And we reverted back to some friends that had been carrying the rock and roll torch in Hollywood for a while. And that we knew we could do some long miles with. And that was Kevin Roentgen on guitar and Francis Ruiz on drums. Yeah, here we are. And we wrote an album came out. And we're touring again. Playing sold out packed houses and capacity houses and life is good again. MAL- Excellent. Now you coming to Australia later on in the year. It's going to be a massive tour, BUCKCHERRY, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR and local Australian band BAD MOON BORN. This is going to be insane. STEVIE- Yeah. huge fans of the HARDCORE SUPERSTAR. They're good friends of ours from Sweden. And there couldn't be a cooler some cooler music. But more than that, it just a great bunch of guys. As you know, we had toured with them through Europe and UK at one point and we got on really well. So we're looking forward to that. MAL- Yeah. Now you toured Australia just recently 2016 I believe it was you didn't come to Adelaide, but the tour before the STEEL PANTHER and FOZZY was a killer. STEVIE- Yeah. Were you there? MAL- Yeah, I was there. STEVIE- Awesome. Awesome. Yeah, that was that was some good fun, those STEEL PANTHER boys are crazy. Huh? MAL- What's the funniest thing? What's the funniest thing that's happened on tour, Stevie? STEVIE- Oh, gosh, you know, with a band like this. We've seen you know, we've seen a lot of, we've seen a lot of sex during our show. Right there in the front row. We've seen Um, I don't know, how graphic can I be? How graphic can I be? MAL- As graphic as you want? STEVIE- Well, yeah, I mean, we've seen guys getting blow jobs off to the right of the stage. We've seen we've met babies born after hookups at our shows. You know, it's it's a it's a it's a crazy, it's a crazy business. But you know, MAL- Wow, I didn't expect that answer. But anyway, STEVIE- It pays the bills. MAL- All right, so what's the band doing between now and when? When you come to Australia, you're on the road now? STEVIE- Yeah, we're on. We're on the road supporting the album 'Warpaint' playing to some great, great crowds. And it's been a warm welcome back. And we couldn't be more grateful and happy that this is all going on again. We should be hitting London, the UK, and then Japan right after you guys. So we got a busy year ahead of us. Really looking forward to seeing you guys again. We always have a great time out there. And, you know, for us, it's, you know, we're huge AC DC fans. And so that's, you know, ground zero for rock and roll for us. So looking forward to being back. MAL- Right, Stevie D, BUCKCHERRY. Thanks for joining me on the line today. Looking forward to seeing you later on in the year here in Australia with HARDCORE SUPERSTAR. Thanks for talking to me. STEVIE- All right. Thanks, Mal.
